what's happening

This is just a little update on my personal life. Usually I don't post about it but I think that it's a good idea to do it now that I want to start blogging again. Well, I haven't been working in anything that is web related in a while. I am concentrating all my time and effort on my new career as a seaman in the US Coast Guard. Two years ago today (19th January, 2010), I shipped out to bootcamp and got sent to USCGC Seneca located at Boston, MA. A couple of days ago I moved to Kittery, ME and reported to my new unit, USCGC Tahoma. Both boats are the same type, 270' long. It's been a hell of a ride and I am still trying to get used to it. I've been to a lot of places and I've taken lots of pictures. I have to say, this is very different from what I did before and I love it!

Now I will have a chance to put my knowledge to use for my new unit. Almost every big boat have it's own unit website and their's really need some work. I have a lot of neat ideas for it already. I will try to blog about it here.

starting again

I just started a new website, and a new blog. I really don't have a lot of time right now. I joined the United States Coast Guard a while ago and they sent me to a cutter (a big boat). Right now I'm a part-time citizen beacuse is more the time that I spend at my boat than at land. That also means is that I spend more  time with a really bad (and blocked) connection in an old computer, using Internet Explorer 6.

What I'm trying to say is "sorry" to those who followed my work.

I will focus more in my personal life experiences and a lot of photography. If I go further away, I'm actually planning to write about my experiences in the schools that the USCG send me to.

Underway Again Oct2010

Well, it's time again. I have to go underway. This time we are going South, and that's all I can say, you have to love OPSEC. It makes me and my mission feel important.

This time I will miss my first Halloween in the states, the same way that I missed my first wedding anniversary in the last patrol, and my wife's birthday when I was at Bootcamp. At least I will be back at Boston, MA just in time for the Holidays.

Internet Underway

The Internet that I have while underway to is so limited (by limited I mean slow), that browsing the web and keeping my blog updated is becoming a torture. Is almost impossible to use. I feel like I'm back on dial up! I can't have Internet in my own computer either so I am not allowed to use one of those applications to write a blog from my desktop and my online WYSIWYG editor is too big. Is not really how slow the connection is but that the Internet is too fast elsewhere. That makes me think about something, something that just a couple of years ago was one of the most important facts about a web developing: we've forgotten to think about how a big a website is. I think that is good, I am one of them. I love not having to think too much about the graphics. I don't have to convert everything to GIF anymore. I started using PNG images with faded transparencies on my websites a long time ago. Who cares of how big are... it does not matter anymore. I've learned to appreciate what I have now. I browse mobile versions of the websites I like and suscribe to the recive my news by email. I also developed a small application to read my RSS feeds without using a lot of bandwidth. It feels that I am getting used to it. Let's hope for the best that the USCG changes their policy and let us have some of that limited Internet in our own computer. Yeah, that's not going to happen...

Hurricane Earl

Hi everyone. I am still roaming the seas onboard the USCGC Seneca. I'm having a pretty good time. Oh, the seas, the sky, the cold, the fog, the fog, the fog... Hahaha... Well, we were supposed to return to our homeport in Boston, MA on Saturday but there is a problem: Hurricane Earl. We will have to stay for at least two more days at sea. The plan is to anchor (using both anchors) somewhere and just take it, pretty simple right? We are expecting waves of 20ft or more and maximum sustained wind speed of 111kt (130mph) with gusts up to 135kt (155mph). The reason is that is easier to go in a SAR (Search & Rescue) mission if we are already outside. We have to keep our motto: Semper Paratus (Always Ready). I will be taking pictures for the Public Affairs Officer during the hurricane and I will publish some in the USCGC Seneca Blog (sorry, is not ready yet) and my blog (as soon as I can). Yes, I'll be carefull. Don't worry, if anything happens we'll call the Coast Guard...
